When healthcare costs more than a family can afford, every visit becomes a decision between care and survival. In six Nigerian states, that calculus is changing. Through a partnership between the Government of Canada (via Canada’s International Trade - Global Affairs Canada) and CHAI, health insurance coverage for vulnerable women and children grew 301% — from roughly 280,000 people to over 1.1 million. 26,000 fewer children across 9 countries were on HIV treatment by the end of 2025.
Behind that number: community health workers who were cut and could no longer track down children who missed appointments. Test kit shortages that meant infants went undiagnosed. The dismantling of the specialized services that pediatric care depends on.
Children already bear a disproportionate share of HIV-related mortality. These declines move further from global targets—not closer.
