NEAVS joins Project Chimps in mourning the loss of Sopulu, who arrived at Project Chimps on Nov. 30, 2016 from the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana. We are thankful for the time Sopulu had at the sanctuary -- where he was able to truly experience the outdoors for the very first time in his life!

With more than 250 chimpanzees, most previously used in biomedical research, and a recent arrival of five newly retired chimpanzees, Chimp Haven is now the largest chimpanzee sanctuary in the world. NEAVS welcomes this exciting news, and we believe ALL retired chimpanzees deserve to experience the remainder of their lives outside of the lab and in the safety of U.S. sanctuary.

Congress has ordered U.S. Department of Agriculture to make previously redacted animal inspection reports publicly available again. NEAVS applauds this directive, and urges Congress to ensure USDA move rapidly to restore the full public database of non-redacted reports.
In a report accompanying USDA's 2018 spending bill, Congress notes, "USDA is now posting heavily redacted inspection reports that make it difficult in certain cases for the public to understand the subject of the inspection, assess USDA's subsequent actions, and to evaluate the effectiveness of its enforcement." The report also states USDA's actions to date do not meet the requirements in H. Rpt. 115-232, which requires, "that the online searchable database should allow analysis and comparison of data and include all inspection reports, annual reports, and other documents related to enforcement of animal welfare laws. USDA is directed to comply with these requirements..."

NEAVS is thrilled to share this 'breaking news' ... Hercules and Leo, two chimpanzees born in 2006 at the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana, along with seven younger male chimpanzees, arrived this morning at Project Chimps sanctuary in Georgia. We also recognize Nonhuman Rights Project for all of the work they did on behalf of Hercules and Leo. We will continue to keep you, our loyal supporters, informed as other retired chimpanzees are moved to the safety of sanctuary they rightly deserve! As always, thank you for your support.

Today is the last day of the USDA public comment period -- NEAVS is asking all of our supporters to be a voice for all animals in labs. Tell the USDA you OPPOSE the proposed changes to redirect inspections of USDA-licensed facilities to private organizations. If you haven't done so already, click on the link below that will direct you to TAKE ACTION -- we've made it easy by including 'talking points', which you may customize or use as they appear. It's so important to keep up the pressure on the USDA to DO ITS JOB in protecting animals!

UK-based National Centre for the 3Rs (NC3Rs) recently awarded its 2017 International prize -- sponsored by pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline -- to Oxford researchers who developed an in silico (computer) model of human cardiac cells, which demonstrates higher accuracy than animal models in drug trials predicting clinical pro-arrhythmic cardiotoxicity.
When compared to clinical data, researchers found the computer model predicted when a drug or compound could cause arrhythmia 89% of the time, while other drug trials on heart cells taken from rabbits only matched up to the clinical data up to 75% of the time.
This development is an example of the many scientific advances happening worldwide in the alternatives field that will ultimately help to replace the millions of animals currently suffering in drug and toxicity testing.

Virtual Lab Rats Could Replace Living Animals in Early Drug Testing Rats, mice, rabbits, and other animals have long been an essential part of testing drugs for safety and efficacy before they make their way to human subjects. But some scientists are trying to spare these animals, and even make drugs safer, by instead creating and relying on virtual test subjects.
