We're celebrating the Neonatology Class of 2026, who graduated last week from Makerere University 🎓✨

Dr. Ediamu Tom and four fellow graduates have completed Uganda’s neonatology fellowship, a program we proudly support alongside Makerere University and Uganda’s Ministry of Health to train the specialists the country’s smallest patients need.

Their specialized training is already saving lives.

When Baby Serendipity was born in Moroto, Uganda earlier this year at just six months of pregnancy and weighing only 700 grams (1.5 lbs), her chances of survival were incredibly slim. But after 95 days of dedicated care from the NICU team led by Dr. Tom, she went home healthy and thriving.
The need is urgent: Uganda loses approximately 32,000 newborns each year, yet many of these deaths are preventable.

This graduation milestone is helping change that:
✅ Uganda has now doubled its number of neonatologists nationwide, from 5 to 10.
✅ In May alone, we trained 90 health workers across Uganda in neonatal care, expanding the reach of lifesaving newborn services.

We are incredibly proud of the Neonatology Class of 2026 and honoured to support the strengthening of Uganda’s health system from within, training specialists who stay, teach, mentor, and transform care for generations to come.

We’re investing in the people who make the first few minutes of a baby’s life count - because these moments are key for survival.

In Uganda, we delivered advanced in-service training in partnership with the Ministry of Health- Uganda and partner institutions to over 90 healthcare workers across seven facilities to strengthen the quality of care for newborns.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to ensuring every newborn has the best possible start in life.

From neonatal resuscitation to quality improvement, the program combined practical skills, mentorship, and hands-on tools to help healthcare teams deliver safer, more effective care for the country’s youngest patients.

Because when healthcare workers are equipped with the right training and support, the impact reaches far beyond the ward - improving outcomes for newborns, families, and entire communities.

The 34th International Confederation of Midwives Triennial Congress is a few days away and we’re looking forward to being in Lisbon alongside midwives, educators, researchers, policymakers, and partners from around the world.

The Congress theme, One Million More Midwives, reflects the urgent need to invest in and strengthen the global midwifery workforce.
