In Igbo culture, a vulture is considered an undesirable, unclean bird not something anyone should hunt or consume. Therefore, if children are wasting their time and energy hunting vultures, it means the elders of that community are either absent, indifferent, or have completely lost their voice.
​This proverb is a timeless reminder about leadership and accountability:

Heavy hearts make poor pillows.

At first glance, a basket is woven with gaps; it is meant for the harvest, not for the well. If a basket somehow manages to carry water today, it might be due to a sudden frost that froze the water, a thick lining of clay, or a fleeting moment of good fortune. But for the basket to look down at the calabash a vessel naturally shaped and hollowed by time specifically to hold water is a mistake born of pride.

Before you count my yams, check your own backyard. Are you sure you even planted this year?
