For nearly 20 years, we’ve developed national and municipal housing strategies, supported refugee housing and resettlement interventions, and assessed financial feasibility for housing projects and products across Asia.

In 2008, we advised Slum Dwellers International - SDI. on how to design and implement its International Urban Poor Fund, a revolving facility to finance community-driven upgrading projects in informal settlements that improve local living conditions and address neighborhoods’ needs. Between 2013 and 2017, the fund invested US $11 million in community-designed projects, improved access to basic services for 45,000 families, and provided access to clean energy for 21,000 families.

As part of the World Bank’s Maldives Urban Development and Resilience Project, we recently developed both demand and supply-side reform recommendations to support the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure in addressing the country's unique affordable housing challenges, building on 5 years of work in the Maldives.

Learn more about our work in Asia across climate-resilient and green housing, policy and institutional reform, women’s access to housing, and more.

Student housing has been an ongoing challenge in Madagascar as universities welcome increasing numbers of students each year, many of whom struggle to find safe, decent, and affordable accommodation.

Commissioned by AFD on behalf of Madagascar’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, this study aims to support the development of a better understanding of student housing needs.

During a 10-day field mission in Antananarivo and Fianarantsoa, AHI and our local partner, Evolutis, engaged with a wide range of stakeholders, including the University of Fianarantsoa, students, landlords, and financial institutions.

We assessed both the supply and demand for student accommodation, including university residences, private rentals, and the broader financial and institutional ecosystem, to identify the key barriers students face in accessing housing and to explore ways to unlock better student housing solutions.

We are now finalizing the diagnostic phase and investigating scenarios for the sustainable development of student housing in Fianarantsoa.
