This week in Washington we are writing to protect civil rights. In recent days, the Executive Branch had ordered federal agencies to halt their use of "disparate impact liability," a policy employed to assess whether policies discriminate against different groups, notably African-Americans, Women, American-Indians, Seniors and the Disabled and Impaired. Federal agencies have been ordered to abandon disparate impact, shredding the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This Administration is pushing to purge Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives that are part of the social fabric of law governing this nation according to The New York Times on May 9th. Dariely Rodrigiuez Chief Counsel for the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights Under Law said this initiative would have a devastating effect. According to the Times, the disparate impact test has been used to root out discrimination for decades in "areas of employment, housing, policing, education and more." Write the federal government and ask them to reconsider the removal of this critical and pathbreaking civil rights solution and make the case for equality. This week in Washington we are writing to protect public broadcasting. Many of us tune in to “Fresh Air,” “Talk of the Nation” and “All Things Considered” on the drive home from work to see our families. Can you imagine a world without public broadcasting ? This is what we are facing with this administration striking at PBS & NPR. Recently, Senator Markey of Massachusetts spoke on the floor of the United States Senate saying that the question is not “can we afford it?” Instead, we should ask, “can we afford to live without it?” Many of us grew up on educational programming like “Sesame Street,” “PBS Kids” and “Curious George,” and children learn vital skills like counting and spelling from these educational programs. “News Hour” is a critical and award winning program that brings us news from the frontlines of Washington and we are wealthier as a nation for its efforts. While PBS & NPR will survive scaled back, rural radio stations will experience devastating financial shortfalls and will not be able to broadcast early emergency alerts when natural disasters like tornadoes and hurricanes batter the Midwest & South. For all those that give a damn about Democracy, write Congress to save Big Bird by signing Common Cause’s petition here.
Tell Congress: Protect Public Media President Trump and his friends in Congress are escalating their war on public media – attempting to slash funding for our Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR). Americans consistently rank PBS and NPR as the most trustworthy networks for news and public affairs because...
