After feeling first the discomfort and then the reward of spin class… some thoughts on creativity as a practice. 🚴♀️

That’s my dog eating her breakfast via feed bowl in the background 😂
Happy belated Mother’s Day! Talking about my mum a little bit and how she contributed to my creative upbringing. 💐
DIRT UNDER MY FINGERNAILS
Once I was a girl
And the sun beat down upon locks of gold
And I sat in the grass of our backyard
Wearing my Little Mermaid t-shirt
I watched my mother
On her knees, in the dirt
Her hands deep in the soil
As she tended to the earth
The flowers coming up all about her
The weeds hiding from her presence
The light that shone from her fingertips
That caressed the ground as if it were her lover
I wondered
Why did she care for the earth so?
Why did she dirty her hands in the ground, until her nails were dark and stained?
Why did she let her back ache, and the calluses form
While the sun hit her skin until it turned it brown?
It did not seem worth it.
And I said that it would never be me.
Now I am a woman
And I wake early in order to go outdoors
And breathe the fresh air
And hear the birds
And whisper to the world how deeply I love
And I bury my hands in the moist soil
And pull the weeds until my fingers ache
And my nails are dark and stained
And the lower part of my back is strained
And there are lines on my skin from where the sun hit me.
My hair is dark now.
And I no longer own that t-shirt.
But he earth calls to me as it calls to my mother
As it called to her mother before her.
Perhaps this green gift goes back a hundred generations
To the first witches who tended the earth to still their souls.
I like to think that I am somehow connected to them
And that they look down and smile at their life’s work
Carrying on.
It is worth it.
Hard to believe I cut this video down by 30 seconds just by minimizing the times I say “um,” “and,” “so,” and stumble over my words. 😆
I’m talking creative daily practice and routine and what that looks like for me in my fiction writing! ✍️
