BREAKING NEWS! The government has announced today that they will do a formal review of the UK’s parental leave policy. This is huge news as paternity leave is currently only two weeks, which is the worst policy in Europe, and only one-third of dads take any paternity leave. Paternity leave hasn’t been changed in the past 22 years, it’s about time it’s changed.
What do I hope will come of the review?
📅 I’d like the 2 weeks of paternity leave to be
extended to 6 weeks leave
💸 I’d like it to be paid at 90% pay
🤯 I’d like government to reform the wildly over-
complicated Shared Parental Leave policy
🙏 And I’d like government to provide something (anything would be good!) for self-employed dads

progress

Mums are doing it all, or nearly it all. Dads are doing the bins 👀 In recent research, mums reported greater responsibility than their partners for the cognitive labor (i.e., the mental load - the thinking, planning, organising, researching) of 29 out of 30 tasks and the physical household labor (i.e., the actual doing) for 28 out of 30 tasks.
Taking out the bins was the only task where partners were responsible for both the thinking and the doing of the task, and home maintenance was the only other task where partners were responsible for the physical labour.

Here’s how to start sharing the 🤯 mental load with your partner. Find 15 minutes and TALK to your partner. This is the first step to share the mental load at home
⚠️ WARNING: it’s not going to happen overnight, it’s going to take time! But revisiting your background to chores is the best place to start, and it’ll be so worth it

Paternity leave makes financial sense.
💸 Mums’ incomes rise ~7% for each month that a dad spends at home on 🧑🍼 paternity leave

Gender stereotypes are everywhere, once you start to look for them
This example may seem harmless, but what this poster implies is that it’s widely accepted that it’s a mum’s job to wash dishes - reinforcing harmful and outdated gender stereotypes about women’s roles in the home
Would it work if the poster said “Your dad is not here, wash your own dishes”? Somehow it seems unlikely…
