Yesterday, NASA’s Artemis II mission launched four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon, marking the first human return to deep space in over 50 years.

So it’s only appropriate that I share this incredible photo that sits in the Mayor’s office: Charles Duke, one of the four surviving Moon walkers, was known to admire the Town of Boone and often enjoyed vacationing here.

He showed that love to our Town with a signed print to the then Mayor, Gordon Winkler, showing him on the surface of the Moon, writing — “To Mayor Winkler and the citizens of Boone, a big salute to you for all your hospitality. Sincere best wishes from Apollo 16.”

It’s by far one of the coolest things in my office, and what better time to share that? Big shoutouts to our Deputy Planning Director, Brandon Wise, for making sure the picture was saved for future generations to appreciate!
