Is it ok to go to the dentist when you’re on treatment? When it comes to oral care we know your dentist can play a significant role- so it is ok for you to go see your dentist. Surface level cleanings are usually ok while on treatment, but you should always talk to your oncologist just to make sure they don’t have any special precautions for you. You should also let your dentist know what chemo or treatment you are on so they can make sure they are being safe for you as well.

When you’re on chemo your immune system can be lowered (increased risk for infection) or you may have low platelet counts (increased risk for bleeding), so make sure your oncologist and dentist know what is going on. Many dentists will ask your oncologist for a ‘dental clearance’ which allows the dentist to tell your oncologist what work you need done… and lets your oncologist tell your dentist what precautions need to be taken and if it’s ok to proceed. In some cases you may need antibiotics to prevent infection- but it is always a good idea to have your oncologist weigh in on dental work.

Some people are also on bone strengthening agents (zometa, xgeva, etc) and those are really important to let your dentist know about as well as it can impact what invasive dental work is allowed.

A wise person also reminded me today that it can be really helpful to see your dentist prior to starting treatment so they can address things in advance.
