🏠 One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from homeowners is that non-admitted insurance companies are somehow inferior to admitted insurance companies.

The reality is that both serve important roles in North Carolina's insurance market, especially here along the coast.

✅ Admitted carriers are approved by the North Carolina Department of Insurance and provide access to the North Carolina Insurance Guaranty Association if the company becomes insolvent.

✅ Non-admitted carriers, such as Orion180 and iCat, operate through the surplus lines market and often provide coverage for homes that admitted carriers may decline. They also have more flexibility to adapt to changing market conditions, which can be especially important in coastal areas exposed to hurricanes, wind, hail, and rising construction costs.

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that admitted status alone does not determine an insurance company's financial strength. In fact, the last two homeowners insurance company insolvencies that affected North Carolina policyholders involved admitted carriers.

For homeowners in Brunswick County and New Hanover County, non-admitted carriers have become an increasingly important source of coverage as many traditional carriers have reduced their appetite for coastal risks.

When evaluating a homeowners insurance policy, I encourage homeowners to focus on:

• The coverage being provided
• The financial strength of the carrier
• Deductibles
• Policy limitations
• Claims reputation
• Whether the policy is a good fit for the property

The best policy isn't necessarily admitted or non-admitted.

It's the policy that properly protects your home and family.

If you'd like a second opinion on your homeowners insurance, I'd be happy to review your current coverage and shop multiple carriers on your behalf.

We have a very unique problem right now... we’re overwhelmed with quote requests. Most insurance agencies struggle to get enough opportunities, but having too many at once can also create challenges.

A big part of this growth comes from our amazing customer service, but I also want to give a special thank you to Denys English and Cumulus Media. The radio campaign has helped us reach far more people throughout Brunswick and New Hanover counties than I could have handled alone with the help of agent Mary English.

Because of this growth, we’re now in the process of bringing on a dedicated service professional to help support the agency and our clients. Once everything is finalized, we’ll introduce our new team member. We’re excited not only for the help she’ll bring to the agency, but also for the opportunity to help someone build a long-term career in the insurance industry with Cold Mountain Insurance.
