There is a fundamental contradiction in earning a living from the disabled and AAC community while doing nothing to challenge the narrative that disabled children are a “flaw” or an inherent wrongness in the world.
Our job in AAC is to foster communication autonomy. But autonomy means nothing if we don’t first establish that the person belongs here, exactly as they are. This isn’t about pro choice or lack of hardships. Choice can exists, acknowledging hardships should exists; what we need to reevaluate is our own bias that some children are less deserving.
