The root word of discipline is “disciple,” which comes from the Latin word discipulus meaning “student”. So, to discipline is to teach.

🧐 What are we *teaching* when we punish?

🧐 Is that a short-term or long-term lesson?

🧐 What does that strategy of “teaching” do to our child’s brain?

🧐 What does it do to the sense of safety a child feels around us?

🧐 When you were a child, did you get disciplined and learn respect? Or did you learn punishment and learn fear as your primary motivator?
