Many of you have heard of the sacroiliac joint, but beyond some vague association to the lower back, most lay people don't know what it is. Like many joints named for the bones that form the joint, the sacroiliac joint (or SIJ) is where your tail bone (sacrum) meets your hip bone (iliac bone). It is a primary, weight-bearing joint when we stand upright, as well as for any upright activities such as walking, running and lifting. Inflammation of the joint occurs in most people at some time in their lives, often due to an injury (like lifting "wrong"), poor body mechanics or simple overuse. SIJ pain is common in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy. We successfully treat acute and chronic SIJ problems literally every day. Call us--we CAN help!!
