Being grounded doesn’t mean nothing affects you. It means you can feel disappointment, anger, grief, or fear without letting the emotion make every decision for you. Emotions are messengers, but if they escalate they can also hijack our brains (the tsunami of hormones taking over the amygdala, and disabling the prefrontal cortex).

But you can pause. You can listen to what the feeling is trying to show you. Do some deep breathing (inhale for 4 , exhale for 6 to engage the parasympathetic nervous system so things calm down). And then you can choose your response with greater clarity.

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” - Viktor Frankl

This is not about denying our emotions or becoming numb. The idea is to become steady enough to stay connected to ourselves, even when life feels difficult.

What helps you return to yourself when your emotions feel overwhelming?

Why do we miss what's good—even when it's right in front of us?

In Episode 6 of Restored: Where Psychology Meets Grace, we're exploring The Psychology of Joy: Why We Miss What's Good.

In this conversation, we discuss:

• Negativity bias and the brain's focus on problems
• Hedonic adaptation and why accomplishments quickly become normal
• Neuroplasticity and how attention shapes experience
• Gratitude as a science-backed practice for cultivating joy
• Faith perspectives on remembering, presence, and God's provision

One of the central ideas in this episode is that joy isn't simply something we stumble upon.

Often, joy is something we learn to notice.

We'll also explore the gratitude practice that inspired the creation of the GLADS Journal and why gratitude remains one of the most common assignments I give to patients.

Who are you underneath the roles you carry?

In Episode 5 of Restored: Where Psychology Meets Grace, we're exploring The Art of Becoming More Fully Yourself.

Many people spend years meeting expectations, fulfilling responsibilities, and adapting to life's demands. Over time, it's possible to become highly functional while feeling increasingly disconnected from yourself.

In this episode, we discuss:

• The psychology of identity and authenticity
• Why becoming yourself can feel uncomfortable from a neuroscience perspective
• The difference between performing and becoming
• How repeated experiences shape our sense of self
• Faith-based perspectives on living from who we were created to be

This conversation is an invitation to move beyond performance and reconnect with the person underneath the expectations.

What if meaningful change isn’t about willpower—but repetition?

Many of us assume transformation happens through motivation, dramatic decisions, or major life overhauls. But psychology tells a different story: sustainable change often comes through small, repeatable actions that gradually reshape our brains, nervous systems, and daily lives.

In this week’s episode of Restored: Where Psychology Meets Grace, The Power of Small Things: Why Tiny Habits Change Lives, we explore:

✔️ Why tiny habits are often more effective than massive goals
✔️ How the brain builds change through repetition and neural pathways
✔️ The connection between nervous system regulation and consistency
✔️ Why faith formation, healing, and resilience are often built in ordinary moments

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated with slow progress, this conversation is for you.

🎧 New episode releases Tuesday. Reflection journal and deeper resources available in the show notes.
