Sally Becker = Hero

Sally Becker is a British artist who rescued nearly 300 sick and wounded children from the war-torn Balkans 20 years ago.

Her journey began when she saw a TV report about a woman and her young child trying to cross "Sniper's Alley" in Sarajevo. The woman cried out, "Why is nobody helping us?"

Despite a complete lack of experience in such operations, Becker immediately decided to go forth and help. She entered the Bosnian war zone in 1993. Because she was Jewish, the ministry of defense gave her permission to help the small Jewish community of Mostar.

Braving sniper fire, Becker brought food and medicine - often purchased with her own money - to the Jews of Mostar, many of whom were Holocaust survivors.

Because of her success in providing humanitarian aid to places the UN wasn't reaching, Becker was soon given permission to evacuate all sick children and their mothers from Mostar, most of whom were Muslim.

Becker borrowed an ambulance and crossed the front line, determined to rescue as many children as possible, despite heavy sniper fire that struck her vehicle.

She succeeded in spectacular fashion, granting life to hundreds of women and children who would have otherwise perished.

Known as the Angel of Mostar, Sally Becker is now a goodwill ambassador for Children of Peace, a charity that helps Israeli and Palestinian children.

For her bravery in saving hundreds of lives at great risk to herself, we honor Sally Becker as this week's Thursday hero at Accidental Talmudist.
