New law raises driver age for golf carts, prohibits usage on some roads.
A new Florida Law prohibiting a person under 18 from operating a golf cart on certain roadways, unless they have proper identification, is now into effect.
The new legislation will also require that the driver carries a government-issued I.D. such as a driver’s license, even if they are 18 or older.
Previously, Florida law allowed a 14-year-old to drive a golf cart. However, with the new law, teens wishing to drive a golf cart must have a valid learner’s driver’s license.
Operation of Golf Cart (HB 949) authorizes a water control district to design certain roads to use gold carts after the county approves the designation.
The operation of a golf cart on the public roads or streets of this state is prohibited under some exceptions.
- A golf cart may be operated only upon a county road designated by a county, a municipal street designated by a municipality, a two-lane county road located within the jurisdiction of a municipality designated by that municipality, or a road that is owned and maintained by a water control district.
- Upon a determination that golf carts may be safely operated on a designated road or street, the responsible governmental entity shall post appropriate signs to indicate that such operation is allowed
