The bonding wire around a pool is one of the most important safety systems in the entire installation. Its job is often misunderstood.

It is not there to carry electricity like a grounding wire. Instead, it keeps all conductive objects around the pool at the same electrical potential, preventing dangerous voltage differences.

Here’s why it matters:

* Without bonding: A metal handrail could be at one voltage while the water is at another. If someone touches both, electricity can pass through their body.
* With bonding: The reinforcing steel, deck steel, pool shell, equipment, ladders, handrails, diving board anchors, and other metallic components are all connected with a continuous #8 solid bare copper wire. Since everything stays at essentially the same electrical potential, there’s no significant voltage difference for a swimmer to bridge.

What gets bonded?

On a typical concrete pool, the bonding system includes:

* Steel reinforcing in the pool shell
* Steel reinforcing in the deck (or an equipotential bonding grid if required)
* Pump motor
* Filter (if metal)
* Heater
* Salt chlorinator
* Automation panels
* Metal ladders and handrails
* Light niches (if applicable)
* Diving board anchors
* Any fixed metal object within about 5 ft of the pool
* The water itself (via an approved water bonding fitting)

Why is the deck bonded?

The concrete deck can become energized from:

* Underground utility faults
* Nearby lightning strikes
* Faulty electrical equipment
* Stray utility voltage

By bonding the deck to the pool and equipment, someone standing barefoot on the deck and touching the water isn’t exposed to a dangerous voltage difference.
