Ten years of using the Masgutova Method has taught me one truth: you do not have to be a therapist to help your child. If you are a mother, father, grandmother — anyone who loves a child who is struggling — you can learn this work.

A reflex is a hard-wired program inside the nervous system. A sensory signal enters the body. Afferent neurons carry it to the brainstem or spinal cord. Efferent neurons fire the motor response. The body acts before the cortex is ever consulted.

This is protection. This is survival. The Rooting reflex finds food. The Hands Supporting reflex catches a fall...etc

When these patterns work, the child is free to learn and connect. When they do not, the body keeps running survival programs in rooms where there is no danger.

When your child pushes you away.
When they scream at the lightest touch.
When they refuse the very thing you know would help.

A nervous system in alarm cannot receive love the way you want to give it. Light touch feels like danger. A hug can feel like a threat. Their body is protecting itself.

This is a body asking for safety first.

Before words. Before correction. Before any demand — your child needs to feel that the world is not pressing in on them.

Try this. Instead of light, quick touches, use deep, firm pressure with your whole palm. Hold for seven seconds. Let the body register: I am here. You are safe.
