Cogorno Golf
I like this simple drill to help golfers learn to
A) hit the ground and
B) hit the ground at or past the ball
Fold up a towel and put it about 1 grip length behind the ball
About 1 inch in the air in terms of height max
Learn to get the club head to hit the ground at or just past the ball while missing the towel
This will help create a more downward angle of attack with your irons
If you normally release your angles too early, hit behind the ball or struggle to take divot this will really help.
If you’re in the opposite camp and are too steep with angle of attack and take divots you need to flip the drill.
Put the towel 1 grip IN FRONT of the ball and miss it on way through. This is just one option that can help shallow the angle of attack
Both of these designed to create more external feels with the club without much mechanical thought.
With that said making sure you push weight into lead foot to start down and get a full turn are 2 key pieces to help move that low point forward if you’re stuck behind the ball.
Always want to check what’s going on before hand to see what’s causing issues if you need to fix those first but this is a good way to reverse engineer some fixes!
I know we do A LOT of videos for fixing pulls and fades…because A LOT of golfers need that ;)
But here’s one for those of you who struggle with hooks and pushes.
At the root of this is a club path that working too far from inside/in to out. A club path too far to the right.
It’s a good problem to have but a problem nonetheless
If your club path is in to out too much and your club face is square to that there’s your push
If your club path is too far in to out and you close the face a bit too much there’s your hook
When you have this pattern and you hit your GOOD ones they can be GREAT. The problem is the BAD ones are too far off. The misses are too wide and working in opposite directions.
Now there could be lots of reasons why your path is too far in to out and or why the club face is getting too closed…
Without seeing your swing here’s where I would start.
1. Work the club path more around through the ball.
You’ll start feeling this about hip high in downswing through to hip high in the follow through.
Your HANDS should be moving LEFT through impact NOT RIGHT.
Start here.
Aim to get the club exiting roughly down your HEEL LINE
2. Feel the toe more behind the heel. This will prevent the club face from getting too close to the path and reduce the left curve. Feel more or less based on the curve you are getting. Still hooking…..exaggerate it more. Starting to fade it——you are over doing it
3. Trail shoulder forward
The more back the shoulder stays the more the path goes right. A LOT of golfers need more of that….but not you if you hook and push.
Focus on getting your trail shoulder FORWARD
Even with or past the ball with your shoulder by the time you get to arms parallel to ground in follow through.
1. Arc hands left
2. Toe behind heel feel
3. Trail shoulder forward
Give that a try and if you do any of these you should see less push and hook. If you don’t, there’s either HUGE issues earlier in your swing or you’re not doing it right/enough.
I say that because if you do any of these you should see results on THE VERY NEXT BALL.
