I’ve been an esthetician for 8 years, and whenever I talk to my patients about removing their makeup, I notice the same mistakes over and over again… so here’s how to do it properly.
Your skin is only as clean as your makeup removal routine. Most people focus on what they apply to their skin, but not on how they remove it.
1. Start with an oil-based cleanser
Oil breaks down makeup, SPF, and excess sebum far more effectively than water alone.
2. Massage gently for at least 60 seconds
This helps loosen buildup, especially around pores and textured areas.
3. Emulsify with water
Add a little water until the oil turns milky. This step helps lift impurities from the skin instead of leaving them behind.
4. Follow with a gentle cleanser
Your second cleanse removes sweat, residue, and anything left on the skin without disrupting the skin barrier.
5. Avoid scrubbing or using hot water
Over-cleansing can damage the skin barrier and lead to dehydration, irritation, and sensitivity.
