We have been seeing and treating an increase in pine weevil activity this year, seen here is the classic Shepard's hook damage on the main leader of a white pine.

Some times they do talk back

The eastern white pine weevil is consider the most destructive pest for white pines in North America. The dead "Shepard's hook" look of the main leader is a sure sign of the pine weevil. It also can infect Colorado, Blue, Norway and Serbian spruces as well as Scots, Red, Pitch, Jack and Austrian pines. They prefer trees between 3 and 20 ft in direct sun to help with incubation.
