With record-setting high temperatures and job sites in full summer swing, this is a great time to revisit the basics of heat safety. Heat illness moves quickly and can turn serious even faster.
OSHA points to three non-negotiables for working in extreme heat: rest, water, and shade. Simple in theory, easy to skip in practice when there's work to be done.
Here's what these non-negotiables actually look like on an active job site:
💧 Hydrate Before You're Thirsty
By the time you feel thirsty, you're already behind. Water and electrolyte drinks should be going in consistently throughout the day, not just on breaks.
🌤️ Plan Around the Sun
When possible, schedule outdoor and rooftop work in the morning hours before peak heat sets in. Work the west side of a building in the morning and the east side in the afternoon to stay in the shade as long as possible.
🛑 Know the Warning Sign
Dizziness, nausea, cramps, slurred speech, confusion, heavy sweating, or no sweating at all - these are all signals to act immediately. Get the worker to a cool place, call 911 if symptoms are severe, and do not let a dizzy worker climb down a ladder unassisted.
🗓️ Watch the Forecast
Supervisors should be adjusting schedules and work locations based on heat index projections, not reacting after someone goes down. The OSHA-NIOSH Heat Index App is a free, practical tool worth having on every foreman's phone.
Employers are required under OSHA regulations to protect workers from recognized hazards, and extreme heat qualifies. If your crew doesn't have a heat illness prevention plan in place, this is thee perfect time to put one together.
Stay safe out there!
