Bunion Surgery
How long can someone suffer with a bunion deformity without having surgery?
Many people just can't schedule surgery and be away from work for 2-4 weeks. Although technically most people with bunions should have them surgically corrected at some point, there are several non surgical treatment options. Some of these would be proper fitting shoes; you would be surprised how many people don't realize that changing the shoe style and size a little can make a big difference in the amount of stress on the joint.
Orthotics, padding, "offloading" the joint can help to decrease the pressure and stress on the big toe joint and bunion.
Sometimes we'll have patients use a walking cast at home for a few days and it will help decrease the inflammation.
Cortisone injection, even just one time can decrease the inflammation and pain for several months for some patients.
