If you have Norwegian DNA, you may know that May 17 is Syttende Mai -- Norwegian Independence Day. It's a day to celebrate wherever you live!
This classic book, The Cotter's Son, A Story from Sigdal, is considered the most popular Norwegian-American novel. It's also the first novel written in present-day North Dakota.
Reading it gives a better understanding of the mindset of the thousands who left their homeland to settle in the United States.
The novel was written in Norwegian in 1884 by H.A. Foss, who was a cotter's son and had recently immigrated to the Upper Midwest from the Sigdal area of Norway. It was serialized in the Decorah, Iowa, Norwegian language newspaper, the Decorah Posten, and became an instant sensation among the recent Norwegian immigrants.
Sixteen editions of this book have been printed in Norwegian, attesting to its enduring appeal.
The English translation was first published in 1963. A second printing is now available to a new generation of readers who can read about the adversities and adventures of Ole Haugen, the poor cotter's son, and Marie Hovland, the rich farmer's daughter.
Their story is as endearing today as it was 140 years ago!
