🦇🪐This coming Friday is a busy night at the Homestead. We have not one, but two, evening programs onsite. Starting at 7:30pm, join Dr. Karen Campbell in the Wayside Lodge for our All About Bats program. Bat boxes are located throughout the Homestead property, and bats can often be spotted nesting and flying around the site. The program will consist of a presentation inside the Lodge followed by a walk to search for bats as dusk falls.

Around the same time, Berks Astronomy will be setting up for their July Star Watch up near the Visitor Center. Visitors are invited to join the club beginning at approximately 8:15pm to enjoy views of the night sky and star gazing using the Berks Astronomy’s telescopes. Sunset is at 8:30pm with dark views starting soon thereafter, and moonset is at 9:31pm. The program will last approximately two hours.

Reservations are not required for either program and both are free to attend, but donations are always welcome. The Star Watch is weather pending, so please check the event page for up-to-date details including potential cancellations due to weather conditions. We hope to see you on Friday evening!

🕯️🔥Join the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their first annual Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop with Heritage Art and Craft Studio on September 20 from 1-3pm. Journey back in time with Greg and Peggy Geesaman to learn the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will take part in the careful and significant process of candle dipping, a traditional Early American method, as they create their own double wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle. In addition, participants will make a 5" cinnamon scented display ornament, by a method similarly used by German Lebkuchen Bakers in the sixteenth century from a Stoneware Cookie mold (designs vary). A Historic Presentation from Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle making in the eighteenth century.

Heritage Art and Craft Studio is co-owned by Greg Geesaman and Peggy Allen-Geesaman. For over fifty years, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History, as well as gardening, landscaping, agriculture, and environmental preservation while Peggy, a native of Berks County, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. This is a beginner-level workshop and is open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. Registration is required, and a form can be obtained by emailing us at [email protected]. The cost is $50/person and all supplies are included. Proceeds go to support the Daniel Boone Homestead. Space is limited to 10 participants. Please register by September 13, 2026. This program is funded and provided by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.
