But, first, some anthropological context and clarification for this well known, though frequently misunderstood, "Two Wolves" story.
Though it's truth, application, and depiction are spot on, and are consistent with universally shared introspections and insights, quite fascinatingly, it is actually a modern fabrication that evolved through several stages before becoming the popular "Cherokee legend" known today. Its history reveals a trajectory from Christian evangelical sermons to a misattributed Native American parable from the Inuit peoples.
The story is now most commonly attributed to the Cherokee or Lenape tribes in popular culture, but research indicates it is not an authentic ancient Native American legend.
Surprisingly, the earliest traceable version appeared in the 1970's in Christian evangelical circles, specifically cited in Billy Graham's 1978 book, where it was attributed to an "Eskimo fisherman" and featured dogs rather than wolves.
The tale was later adapted into the Cherokee wolf narrative by the early 2000's, serving as a modern creation that borrows both biblical and Native imagery for increased emotional impact of a universally human truth and lesson we all must learn.
This serves as excellent evidence that the nature of God/Consciousness, humanity and nature, are most effectively and best understood from the standpoint of Comparative Religion- seeking the truths and lessons that transcend individuals, cultures, and time. This is the most effective way to get the clearest view, and to distinguish between secular dogmatic attachments and beliefs, and the clear flowing current of Ultimate Reality that courses through the whole of existence, remaining unchanged, regardless of the land, language, beliefs, culture or religion in which it manifests.
The Ultimate is undifferentiated. Ultimate Truth cannot be changed, and so will manifest and abide despite any material physical factors of influence. The words may be different, but upon cross-examination, the lessons and truths retain the same core essence.

1. The Original Version: Dogs, Not Wolves-
The earliest traceable versions of the story did not feature wolves or Native Americans.
-1960s Origins: Variations appeared in the early 60's featuring dogs (one black, one white) fighting inside a person. These were used by Christian ministers to illustrate the biblical concept of the struggle between the flesh and the spirit (Romans 7).
-Billy Graham’s Adaptation (1978): The most direct precursor appeared in Billy Graham's 1978 book, The Holy Spirit: Activating God’s Power in Your Life. Herein, Graham attributed the story to an "Eskimo fisherman" (Inuit) who trained two dogs to fight for betting purposes. The moral remains the same -"The one I feed the most wins."

You are not a small thing living in a vast universe. You are the vast universe, experiencing itself through a small aperture.

This is not poetic exaggeration. Hall, drawing on the Hermetic and Theosophical traditions, was describing a structural claim about consciousness itself: the individual soul is not separate from the totality it appears to be contained within. It is a compression of that totality, every age the universe has passed through, every form life has taken, every experience consciousness has ever had, folded down into the singular point of awareness you currently call yourself.

The Hermetic principle of correspondence states this precisely: as above, so below. The macrocosm and the microcosm are not two different scales of the same thing observed from different distances, they are literally the same information, expressed at different resolutions. Study the self deeply enough, and you are not learning about one small being among billions. You are examining the same pattern that organizes galaxies, seasons, and the movement of every living thing that has ever existed.

This is why every contemplative tradition insisted that self-knowledge was the highest form of knowledge available to a human being , not because introspection is comfortable, but because the self, examined with sufficient depth, reveals the same laws that govern everything else. The Delphic maxim gnothi seauton, know thyself, was never meant as a psychological exercise in the modern sense. It was understood as the master key to metaphysical knowledge itself.

Jung arrived at the same conclusion from within depth psychology: the collective unconscious is not a separate reservoir somewhere outside the individual psyche. It runs through every person, connecting the personal to something far larger, , ancient, and shared. To know your own depths is to touch what every human being who has ever lived has touched.
