Last week, I gave four presentations of my father's (cinematographer Andrew Laszlo) Holocaust Memoir in Akron, Ohio to Lippman School, Our Lady of the Elms School, The Jewish Community Center and at the Public Library for the Akron Summit Commemoration and Awards Ceremony. Special thanks to Laura Ralph of the Akron Council of Holocaust and Genocide Education for putting the events together. The library awards ceremony was special. It was well attended by community leaders and a diverse cross section of the community. The city of Akron showed their commitment to supporting their Jewish friends and making the world a better place. After the talk, I was approached by PBS of Ohio to do an interview about my talks. At the JCC event, I was asked to light a candle in remembrance of all those who had suffered in the Holocaust. It reminded me of when my father lit a candle for the same reason with Senator Joe Lieberman in the Capitol Rotunda for the 2004 Holocaust Days of Remembrance. I felt a real connection to my father. Pictured below: Me lighting a candle at the JCC event. My father lighting a candle with Senator Lieberman. My father with Elie Wiesel another honored guest at the 2004 event.

Hotchkiss is a beautiful school with an accomplished student body. It was an honor to spend time on campus addressing all classes and spending time in discussions with select groups. Special thanks to Mr. Pierre Yoo, Director of Pluralism and Community and Graham King from the Hotchkiss Hillel for putting the trip together and their great hospitality. They are the next generation. When I spend time with young, bright caring people, it makes me believe that there is great hope for the future.

On MLK day (January 19th), Several Eastern Montana Schools gathered in Miles City to see a traveling Anne Frank Exhibit sponsored by the University of South Carolina. High school students from Miles City and Billings spent two weeks studying Anne Frank's life and acted as docents. They did a fabulous job. I was asked to tell my father's story as he was at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the same time as Anne Frank. After the presentation, the attendees formed groups and rotated through four breakout sessions. I moderated discussion groups in one of the four sessions. It was inspiring to see the engagement and vision of the students. THERE IS GREAT HOPE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION. Over the next few weeks, the exhibit will be in Billings, Bozeman Whitehall and Missoula. I hope many of you can attend and listen to the student docents tell the story. Pictured below: the presenters, the immortal words of Anne Frank written when she was 15 years old, the audience. I donated a copy of my father's (cinematographer Andrew Laszlo) memoir, Footnote to History, to the libraries of every school in attendance.
