Not all licensing is red tape. In security, it’s public protection.

Montana leadership has started a conversation around licensing, and potentially lessening the number of industries that participate in the process for their employees. When we talk about reducing barriers to employment, that’s a conversation worth having. But in the private security industry, licensing isn’t about limiting competition — it’s about protecting the public.

Security professionals are entrusted with:
• Access to private property
• Sensitive client information
• Conflict de-escalation in high-stress situations
• Sometimes fi****ms and high-value assets

Licensing ensures background checks, training standards, and accountability. It creates a baseline of trust.

There’s a difference between unnecessary bureaucracy and minimum standards that safeguard communities.

If we want to grow Montana’s workforce, let’s do it wisely — by expanding pathways into licensed professions, not eliminating the guardrails that protect the public.
