: The Jack of the United States, commonly referred to as the Union Jack, is flown on ships in port or anchored from 8 a.m. until sunset. It has flown above U.S. Navy ships for the majority of the Navy's history. The First Union Jack, a flag featuring 13 red & white stripes, a rattlesnake, and the words "Don't Tread On Me", was flown in lieu of the Union Jack during three periods of time; 1776 - 1777, 1975 - 1976, & 2002 - 2019. The Union Jack was brought back on June 4, 2019, the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.
