I’m deeply grateful to all my neighbors, friends, and family members who volunteered countless hours because they believed in this campaign. There is no way we could have won this election in 32 days without the gifts, skills, and passion you brought to this work. Thank you for being by my side through it all. I also could not have won this election without the meaningful work that has been done across many campaign cycles by grassroots, community centered candidates, and amazing volunteers, who have inspired hope in Berwyn. We are standing on the back of giants today, courageous neighbors who have fought to shift how we lead and govern in our community.

This campaign wasn’t about one race, or even one candidate, it was about transforming our local politics by putting people over profits and building a Democratic party that centers working people. At a time where fascism and authoritarianism dominate politics in our country, in ways that don’t trickle down but cascade into our very own community, we must organize locally to stand up for our neighbors, our community, and our democracy.

The question we now get to ask each other is what could an inclusive, collaborative, and engaged Democratic Party make possible here in Berwyn? What sort of progressive, multiracial, co-generational, working class movement can we build together? What policies do we want to see our state legislators pass? And how could we serve as a model for surrounding cities, villages and towns that want to co-govern and move away from stale machine politics. There is so much possibility at the local level. I look forward to building with my neighbors, as I’ve done as an alderperson, school board member, and community organizer to center the issues of everyday people.

At the same time, the Democratic Party is not the only way we can create change. It will be important we continue to focus on tending to the civic ecosystem in Berwyn. We need folks to know it's okay to find your cause, join something, start a community project, and work on issues with care and love. We must do both. We need to continue to build a healthy civic culture if we hope to see our vision for policy and new systems to come to life.

Thanks again to everyone who supported this campaign! This win belongs to our youth team, our elders, our Spanish speaking volunteers, the members of our coalition, our graphic designers, our bridgers, weavers, and uniters on the team, elected officials who served as mentors and advisors, neighbors who hosted house parties, small businesses that let us gather and served as safe spaces to rest, candidates who co-endorsed, my brilliant and supportive campaign manager who spent just as much time on this campaign as I did, my wife and children who helped me get better after being in the hospital with pneumonia to kick off the campaign only to put up with me being gone for a whole month to finish up the race, my mom for teaching me how to fight with love, and my brother for always being in my corner.

We did it. We all did something no one thought we could accomplish and now we get to continue that trend. We get the opportunity to shape the Democratic Party here in Berwyn, one that reflects our dreams, hopes and values. I hope you join us in this work. There is so much to be done!

Estoy profundamente agradecido con todos mis vecinos, amigos y familiares que ofrecieron incontables horas de su tiempo como voluntarios porque creyeron en esta campaña. No hay manera en que hubiéramos podido ganar esta elección en 32 días sin los talentos, habilidades y la pasión que ustedes aportaron a este trabajo. Gracias por estar a mi lado en todo momento. Tampoco habría podido ganar esta elección sin el trabajo significativo que se ha realizado a lo largo de muchos ciclos electorales por parte de candidatos de base, centrados en la comunidad, y voluntarios increíbles que han inspirado esperanza en Berwyn. Hoy estamos parados sobre los hombros de gigantes: vecinos valientes que han luchado por transformar la manera en que lideramos y gobernamos en nuestra comunidad.

Esta campaña no se trató de una sola contienda, ni siquiera de una sola candidatura; se trató de transformar nuestra política local poniendo a la gente por encima de las ganancias y construyendo un Partido Demócrata que centre a la clase trabajadora. En un momento en que el fascismo y el autoritarismo dominan la política en nuestro país, de maneras que no solo bajan gradualmente sino que se derraman directamente en nuestra propia comunidad, debemos organizarnos a nivel local para defender a nuestros vecinos, nuestra comunidad y nuestra democracia.

La pregunta que ahora podemos hacernos es: ¿qué podría hacer posible un Partido Demócrata inclusivo, colaborativo y participativo aquí en Berwyn? ¿Qué tipo de movimiento progresista, multirracial, intergeneracional y de clase trabajadora podemos construir juntos? ¿Qué políticas queremos ver aprobadas por nuestros legisladores estatales? ¿Y cómo podríamos servir como modelo para ciudades, pueblos y comunidades vecinas que buscan cogobernar y alejarse de la política tradicional estancada? Hay muchísimas posibilidades a nivel local. Espero seguir construyendo con mis vecinos, como lo he hecho como concejal, miembro de la junta escolar y organizador comunitario, para centrar los temas que afectan a la gente común.

Al mismo tiempo, el Partido Demócrata no es la única forma de crear cambio. Será importante que sigamos cuidando y fortaleciendo el ecosistema cívico en Berwyn. Necesitamos que la gente sepa que está bien encontrar su causa, unirse a algo, iniciar un proyecto comunitario y trabajar en los temas con cuidado y amor. Debemos hacer ambas cosas. Necesitamos seguir construyendo una cultura cívica saludable si queremos ver que nuestra visión de políticas públicas y nuevos sistemas cobre vida.

¡Gracias de nuevo a todos los que apoyaron esta campaña! Esta victoria pertenece a nuestro equipo juvenil, a nuestros mayores, a nuestros voluntarios de habla hispana, a los miembros de nuestra coalición, a nuestros diseñadores gráficos, a quienes tienden puentes, tejen relaciones y unen a las personas en el equipo; a los funcionarios electos que fueron mentores y asesores; a los vecinos que organizaron reuniones en sus casas; a los pequeños negocios que nos abrieron sus puertas y sirvieron como espacios seguros para reunirnos y descansar; a los candidatos que nos respaldaron mutuamente; a mi brillante y solidario gerente de campaña que dedicó tanto tiempo a esta campaña como yo; a mi esposa e hijos, que me ayudaron a recuperarme después de estar hospitalizado con neumonía al inicio de la campaña y que luego soportaron mi ausencia durante todo un mes para terminar la contienda; a mi mamá, por enseñarme a luchar con amor; y a mi hermano, por estar siempre a mi lado.

Lo logramos. Todos hicimos algo que nadie pensó que podíamos lograr, y ahora podemos seguir con ese impulso. Tenemos la oportunidad de darle forma al Partido Demócrata aquí en Berwyn, uno que refleje nuestros sueños, esperanzas y valores. Espero que se sumen a este trabajo. ¡Hay muchísimo por hacer!

Judge rules Broadview protest curfew violates First Amendment Judge Edmond Chang said Broadview's daily curfew "cannot stand under the First Amendment," but the village is allowed to maintain the "free speech zones" and can enact a curfew in specific circumstances.

I was deeply humbled to be at the table with leaders who stand up for the people, fight against corruption and get things done!

Dr. Robin Kelly is an inspiration to me. She isn't about platitudes or empty promises. She puts in the work every single day to represent her constituents. She's also rooted in relationships. She has spent years cultivating deep connections with the communities she serves and the people she works with in Congress.
