The MEng Capstone project creates meaningful opportunities for students to get real world experience by partnering with leaders in industry.

Shreya Walavalkar, MEng ‘26 (MSE), and her team partnered with NASA to develop protective coatings for a flexible heat shield material.

“[We] worked with real mission timelines and objectives, which differed significantly from a typical school research project. Instead of focusing only on technical performance, the project also had to consider scalability, manufacturability, and the realities of carrying a mission from initial design to final implementation.”

Meet the UC Berkeley Master of Engineering (MEng) Capstone Team 181: Shreya, Gregory, and Annika — who partnered with Dr. Lauren Abbott and NASA during their project.

Their goal was to identify and evaluate options for improving the oxidation resistance of materials used in mechanically deployable hypersonic decelerators targeted for sample return and Earth aerocapture missions.

This team is part of the Fung Institute Capstone Partnership Program — a select cohort of industry collaborations that receive dedicated support from Berkeley Engineering faculty, career advisers, and the Fung Institute’s Chief Innovation and Learning Officer throughout their nine-month project.

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, we appreciate your partnership, and we’re proud to spotlight what becomes possible when UC Berkeley engineering talent meets real-world industry challenge.
