BISP is hiring an Academic Specialist at 50% time (20 hours per week, in-person position) for the Fall semester. Academic Specialists provide advising and support for participants throughout the term and they also facilitate sections of the BISP Sociology 198 course which are required for all undergraduate participants in BISP. Academic Specialists work in a team with two other Specialists in course planning and cross training.

The appointment dates run from August 14-December 18, 2026. Salary: anticipated salary for Fall 2026 is $36.50/hour.

To apply:
-By July 14, submit your resume or CV to [email protected]
-Subject heading: Academic Specialist position

Further details:
Advising is a key component of the role, and because Academic Specialists facilitate in-class discussions on various topics (such as cross cultural communication, education models, plagiarism and academic dishonesty, how to prepare for exams or papers in the US, and etc.), it is important for incumbents to have experience teaching in an academic classroom setting.

This is a limited position for the fall semester, and there might be an opportunity for extending into future semesters as we continue and maintain our program growth.

In the Spring 2026 semester, there were three academic specialists, offering 12 sections of the BISP Sociology 198 course and office hours. Our students come mainly from China, South Korea, Taiwan, Norway, Mexico, India, Germany, France, Spain and Brazil, and we are expanding to additional parts of the world. The students are all screened and interviewed prior to admission into the program, and all have varying levels of English proficiency.

Summary of qualifications and experience:
-Prior advising and teaching experience
-Prior experience working with students in international education
-Holds a PhD
-Familiarity with UC Berkeley a plus
