One guitar. One player. A world of music.

There's something uniquely rewarding about playing solo. With no rhythm section to lean on, every melody, harmony, groove, and improvisation is yours to shape.

In Solo Jazz Guitar: From Joe Pass to Julian Lage, guitarist Derek Barber explores the art of unaccompanied jazz guitar, from pioneers like Django Reinhardt and Joe Pass to contemporary voices like Julian Lage.

You'll work on chord melody, solo arrangements, improvisation, accompaniment, and the skills needed to build your own solo guitar repertoire—all while learning what makes this tradition so rewarding.

🎸 For experienced jazz guitarists
📍 In person at the Jazzschool starting July 6

If you've ever wanted to become a more confident and expressive solo player, this class is a great place to begin.

We're always excited to celebrate programs that help young people discover the joy of making music together.

Our friends at Living Jazz are now enrolling for JAM Camp West, a week-long summer camp in the beautiful Northern California redwoods where young musicians ages 10–17 can play, sing, improvise, create, perform, and build lasting friendships.

With more than 20 classes each day—including jazz, hip hop, songwriting, percussion, ensembles, dance, and open mics—JAM Camp is a place where creativity, community, and self-expression take center stage.

📅 July 18–24, 2026

If you know a young musician looking for an unforgettable summer experience, this is one worth exploring.

What happens when middle school musicians spend a week inside the music?

You get this. 🎶

Week 1 of Middle School Jazz Camp is in full swing, and today Javier Navarrette and David Flores brought the rhythm, feel, and joy that makes this music come alive.

The best part? These students aren’t just learning notes on a page.

They’re learning how to listen.
How to take a chance. How to play together.
How to find their own sound in the middle of the band.

Week 1 wraps tomorrow, and we’re already hearing the growth. Can’t wait to see what week 2 has in store.

Big thanks to our faculty, students, and families for making this week swing.

Come hear what they’ve been working on all week at their free student performance this Friday, 6–9pm. Bring your people and cheer on the next generation of jazz musicians.
