A root canal procedure occurs when your dentist has to remove the pulp of a tooth that has become infected or otherwise severely impacted. Essentially, your teeth are formed by layers, with the enamel representing the hardened outer surface and a porous known as dentin forming the inner layer. Each tooth has a center with a collection of soft tissue, or pulp, that contains the nerves and blood vessels that promote growth for the tooth. Root canals are often needed when the pulp is affected by decay, an untreated cavity, or other factors.
