In a previous piece, I explored how many of us lose access to much of what we feel, leaving anger as one of the few emotions still available. This raises a natural question: how much of what we feel in love is truly new—and how much of it is shaped by what we already know?
We often think we fall in love for a single reason. We meet someone, feel a connection, and something opens. There is attraction, curiosity, and a sense of being seen. It feels natural, sometimes even effortless. We tell ourselves it is about shared values, personality, timing, or chemistry.
