Peace Officers Memorial Day is observed each year on May 15th to honor federal, state, and local law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty. It’s part of National Police Week in the United States.
The importance of the day comes from several things:
•Remembering sacrifice by recognizing officers who lost their lives protecting their communities, often in unpredictable and dangerous situations.
•Supporting surviving families and agencies with events to bring together coworkers, friends, and families who carry the impact of those losses long after the incident itself.
•Recognizing public service, this day highlights the role peace officers play in public safety, emergency response, and community protection.
•Preserving history and legacy with ceremonies, memorial walls, and honor guards to ensure fallen officers are remembered by future generations and not reduced to statistics.
The observance was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962 when he signed a proclamation designating May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week.
