KDFWR - Purchase Region

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife staff from the Purchase Region recently got together for a field day focused on moist soil management!
The team visited several sites on Doug Travis WMA to discuss current conditions, evaluate vegetation, and share ideas on techniques that improve habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife.
The photo here illustrates excellent moist soil vegetation response this year as a result of herbicide applications last summer. The vegetation consists of diverse species, including Smartweed, wild millet, sprangletop, and other beneficial species.
In the fall, every flooded field in our waterfowl areas represents months of planning and management— from controlling invasive species, managing water levels, and using various techniques with tillage and herbicide applications!

Taste of the Bluegrass, an annual culinary event taking place in Lexington but bringing in food and drinks from across the state, happened last Friday, and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife (along with partners from the UK Extension) made an appearance.
Not only did they “make an appearance,” but they took home the “People’s Choice Award” with their smoked silver carp salad!
Even better? The fish was locally sourced, straight from the waters of Western Kentucky.
You may be wondering, “Carp… really? You can eat carp?” And the answer is, yes! Not only can you, but it is encouraged as a sustainable way to cleanse our waterways of this invasive species.

A little power outage couldn’t stop our team at Minor Clark Fish Hatchery!
This morning, they loaded 525,661 striped bass, each around 1.6 inches in size, into 4 hauling trucks and sent them on their way to Lake Cumberland (425,612), Kentucky Lake Tailwaters (50,037), and Barkley Lake Tailwaters (50,012).
To answer some questions…
Why small?
➝ 1.6” fish were stocked because it gets them out of the most vulnerable stage and into their homes as quickly as possible. For this species, stocking smaller works out the best.
Why not “my” lake?
➝ Stocking is determined by local fisheries biologists, and lakes are chosen based on which offer the best opportunity for survival to a size most anglers prefer.
Shoutout to our hatcheries team for working rain or shine, in darkness or in light!
