Happy Birthday Mom. This one’s for you. Shore Acres Gardens 46 years later. My first botanical garden was shared with you when I was only four and I fondly remember this time like it was yesterday. That day was so magical as we walked hand in hand, played chase across the expansive lawns, hide and seek throughout the giant rhododendrons where I can still hear your voice echoing, Jenny Henny Penny where are you.
When you found me you would pick up spent blooms and put them in my hair and pockets saying they’re still pretty even from the ground.
When I returned to these magical gardens surrounded by ancient forest along the ocean, I made my way back to the lily pad pond, where I surprised you when I fell in because I thought I could hop from one to the next.
You rescued me and we were both soaking wet laughing and then we sun bathed on the lawns to dry out.
We ended that magical day down on the beach roasting marshmallows and watching the beautiful sunset over the ocean wrapped up together under a blanket. Spring was your season.
I spent today working outside in my new yard, listening to the red wing blackbird we both loved, dreaming of how I will cultivate a new garden space and thinking of and feeling you in each moment of today. I love you, I miss you.
