Engine #201 is returning to the Nevada Northern Railway after 38 years! Locomotive 201 is the last of it's type in the world. It originally served the Kennecott Copper Mine. All the others of it's type no longer exist, so it's become a national treasure. After returning home to the NNRY in Ely, Nevada, it will be restored and will give rides to visitors as part of living history tours.
Since the NNRY's rails no longer connect to the main lines it's being trucked by the Intermountain Rigging & Heavy Haul company. They are traveling at a max speed of 35 mph and a total weight of almost 500,000 lbs!
We at STM actually have family who worked at the Kennecott Copper Mine, and another who was a train engineer (Salt Lake to Truckee), possibly even on this train, so we decided to take a few minutes to document this historical locomotives’ return home.
