She no longer remembers it's her birthday. He got her a present anyway 04/19/2026

Please read this story to the end…that’s where you’ll find the best answer. And, please keep visiting and keep offering gifts that bring moments of joy. It will bring refreshing joy to both of you! One of my favorite Christmas mornings was spent giving each person a gift that fit their personal preferences when I worked in life enrichment in a memory care community. The gifts were inexpensive, but brought such joy! (To them and to all of us who watched them open and enjoy them!) It didn’t even matter that the gifts ended up wandering to other people’s rooms eventually as people couldn’t keep track of which gift belonged to whom. In fact, when the gifts circulated to others, they just brought joy again! Don’t spend a lot or give something you’d be sad to lose, but give something that brings joy for a little while. Just the act of receiving and unwrapping something new brings joy, but it also brings joy over and over as they keep rediscovering something they love in their room days and weeks after your visit. Even brief moments of joy matter and can relieve a little grief for both of you.

She no longer remembers it's her birthday. He got her a present anyway A special day can be tinged with sorrow when your partner has dementia. But then he found the perfect gift.

What Living on a Dementia Ward Taught Me About Being Human | Teun Toebes | End Well 2025 03/20/2026

This is a good reminder of why we need to create bigger dreams that help people with dementia live full lives with inclusion and human connection. After experiencing beautiful relationships with the people I spent every day with while working in memory care life enrichment, I truly believe this dream is possible.

Exciting news! We're starting a new To Whom I May Concern virtual sharing group next month! If you, or anyone you know, has MCI or early to mid-stage cognitive change related to dementia, please join us for an informational meeting online on February 9th to learn more about the program. This is an opportunity to connect with others who understand the impact cognitive change has on your life, and to share your story to help others better understand. Letting the Heart Lead 01/05/2026

Last year was wonderful because I was privileged to work with so many families who are living well with dementia! Thank you all for reaching out to me! However, that left little time for me to add to my blog page, which hasn't had a new post in a very long time! This year, I hope to add blogs more regularly, beginning with what was on my mind today!

Letting the Heart Lead Those of us supporting people with dementia need to let our hearts lead by setting aside the expectations (and anxiety) that our minds create so that we can accept and welcome the deeper parts of themselves that they are trying to share with us. The more often we ask our minds to rest so that our he...

Books for People with Dementia | Dementia Support Com 12/27/2025

Check out my latest book recommendation for people who are living with neurocognitive changes. It's "Dementia Man: An existential journey" by Samuel A Simon. He insightfully shares how he found hope and purpose after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's by speaking out and advocating for inclusion of people who are living with cognitive change. He also shares what gives his life meaning and thoughtfully explains why he knows life is still worth living, even as his brain continues to change. This will bring hope to those who are facing their own neurocognitive changes and will offer perspective to those who want to support them. It's available for purchase on Amazon.com and other booksellers. https://www.dementiasupportcommunity.com/books

I highly recommend Transitions program support if you’re supporting someone with dementia, especially if they also have other medical needs. (From either Hospice of Redmond or Partners in Care). These programs are a beautiful gift to our community from these nonprofits!

Do you know someone with a dementia diagnosis who could use more support?

Hospice of Redmond offers a free Transitions program designed to help individuals and families navigate the challenges of a life-limiting illness, including dementia.

This isn't hospice care. It's a non-medical support program that can provide:
✅ Emotional support to ease feelings of isolation.
✅ Help connecting with community resources.
✅ Respite care to give caregivers a much-needed break.
✅ Companionship from a network of trained volunteers.

The best part? You don't need a doctor's referral to get started. If you or a loved one could benefit, contact us to learn more. You are not alone on this journey.
