HOARibly cold this week!

Hoar frost forms with the the air is cold and calm and the humidity is high. It forms when water particles, or moisture, in the air sublimate (go from a gas to a solid, skipping the liquid phase) onto surfaces such as branches, fences, poles, etc. It is light, fragile, and usually feather shaped.

Hoar frost is different from rime ice (thick ice layer you see often in the mountains). Rime ice actually needs wind to form, and is much heavier and thicker than hoar frost.

We had fun exploring the the ice crystals by measuring them, eating them, and watching it fall! ✨✨
