It is with the deepest sadness that we share the passing of Chief Kevin Hester (WCSO, Ret.). Chief Hester passed peacefully at home on Tuesday, surrounded by his family.

Chief Hester dedicated over 30 years of honorable service to Whatcom County and the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, serving from November 1, 1991 to December 25, 2021.

His career at WCSO included Patrol Deputy, Detective, the Drug Task Force (DTF), serving as both Sergeant and Lieutenant of DTF, and Chief Civil Deputy/Chief of Investigations and Support Services. After retiring from the WCSO, Kevin continued his commitment to public service by leading the City of Nooksack as its mayor, a role he has proudly held since 2022.

His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to this community leave a legacy that will not be forgotten.

Although Kevin retired after a significant career, his service continues through his son, Collin Hester, who proudly carries the torch forward as a member of our agency.

We are seeing another uptick in reports of scam phone calls, specifically regarding loved ones in jail. No one from the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office will call you and ask you to pay to post bail, get medical treatment or for ankle monitoring.

Just. Hang. Up!

Although many of these types of callers use telephone numbers with Whatcom County area codes and prefix numbers and some even show up identified as a law enforcement agency, most of the persons engaged in this fraudulent activity are actually out of state or out of the country and are very difficult to identify and capture.

Again...Just. Hang. Up!
