Meet Kai, our Corgi who we affectionately call Kai-dee watches over the chickens while they are let out into the fields. He's too old to do much guarding or herding, but he likes to stay in the thick of it.
We keep them in their coop for the morning so that they lay their eggs in the nest boxes. Otherwise they go rogue and try to find creative places to lay their eggs.
This year we are fencing in our vegetable fields so that the chickens can have free range of the rest of the acreage. While we don't let them directly into the vegetable areas, their bedding will be composted and eventually used to fertilize the fields in the fall before cover crops are planted. If we let them, they would eat all of our crops before we could. They provide great pest control, and yummy eggs of course!
