What do you need from your partner during birth?
It’s an important question to take time with. While we often assume support will come naturally in a strong relationship, it’s actually very common for partners to feel unsure or freeze if this hasn’t been talked through beforehand.
And just as often, the person giving birth hasn’t fully named what they’re hoping for either.
We encourage having this conversation in the second trimester, when birth is starting to feel real and you still have time to prepare together for the kind of experience you truly want.
If you’re looking for a start to finish examination of how to show up and be supportive during birth, an excellent book on the subject is The Birth Partner by Penny Simkin.

“I can't imagine birthing my babies anywhere but here! This was my second time birthing at the birth center, and its true that every birth is unique. With this birth the thing that stood out most was that I was much more aware (instead of my first being a more primal experience) so I was pretty direct with everyone at the birth center (my mom, husband, 3 year old daughter and Eloisa and the student midwives). They handled it so well when I barked orders of what I needed from them while I was in active labor. They also were really gentle when giving me advice of what I needed to do to get labor to progress a bit faster than it was happening. I would put 100% of my trust in these folks again to deliver any of my babies! I think for anyone contemplating going with midwives to definitely enquire. It seemed a little unconventional at first, because midwifery is a lot less invasive than any other medical care I've had...but like I said, I felt totally supported and cared for throughout both my pregnancies and births with all the amazingly competent staff and peaceful atmosphere.”
Laura, we truly loved being part of both of your birth stories. You were so strong and steady throughout, and it was an honor to follow your lead. You were absolutely the boss in the room, as it should be!

The truth is, first babies can absolutely be born at birth centers.
It’s a common misconception that birth centers are only for experienced moms, but many first-time parents choose this kind of care because they want more support, more time, and a provider they truly know before labor begins.
