While our team attended Shelter After Dark, hosted by the amazing people at Skagit Humane Society last week we were approached about a sweet pup that has spent the last couple years at WAIF. Those couple years have been heaven to him compared to the time he spent before.
Yesterday our team drove down to Whidbey Island to meet this handsome man and his incredible team. A team that has worked tirelessly to build this boy up. A team that was very open to new ideas. We have developed a plan and will be going down quite a bit over the next couple of months.
Meet Zuma ❤️🩹
Because his life matters.
Because he DESERVES this chance.
Because when multiple organizations come together with one common goal, magic happens.
On April 9th, Zuma will have been a shelter dog with us for two years. We would love to get him settled into a home soon so he can learn what it is like to have a loving family of his own. You may recall that Zuma was one of several dogs rescued from a suspected dogfighting ring. He and three of the other dogs he was rescued with passed behavior assessments so they could be adopted out. His companions were adopted long ago but he was the shyest of them. Shelter staff have worked with him and call him “a sweetheart”. Zuma is nicely mannered, knows how to sit, is gentle in taking a treat from your hand, and walks pretty well on a leash. He is considered special needs due to his background and his shy nature. He is in need of a home with no kids under 10 and no other dogs. Please give the shelter a call at (360) 678-8901 if you have questions about this very special boy. He just needs an opportunity to show what a good boy he is.

Repost:
From rescuers everywhere...
Our mission was to help the abused, neglected and discarded dogs in our area and beyond.
Our mission has never been to relieve you of the commitment YOU made to your dog when you took them in.
People have babies and keep their dogs.
People change careers and keep their dogs.
Peoples schedules get hectic and they keep their dogs.
People move and find a way to keep their dog.
People run into issues with manageable/trainable behavior AND THEY KEEP THEIR DOGS.
These situations are not unique.
We didn’t start this rescue to bail you out. I’m sorry, I know that may sound harsh— and yes, we know that there are absolutely situations in which people can truly no longer care for their dog- and we help with those as much as we can.
But for the love of Dog— step up for your dog. Show up for your dog. Show your dog the same love and commitment today that you showed them the day you brought them home.
Dogs are being euthanized every single day because the shelters do not have space. FRIENDLY. HEALTHY. HAPPY. ADOPTABLE. DOGS.
Your dog is no different than any of the dogs who have been losing their lives every day and if you give up on your dog— they could be next.

Mr. Abuelito Medical Pupdate ❤️🩹
We have quite a few things going on with this handsome grandpa. Let’s break it down:
🩺 Prior to Abuelito leaving CA both of his ears were packed with medication that slowly dissolves due to infection in both ears.
🩺 While he is under for his surgery his ears will be deep cleaned and reassessed.
🩺 There is a small mass on his testicals that we will be removing when he is neutered and sending out for testing to confirm what exactly it is (we are not particularly worried about this mass).
🩺 There is a small mass on his left eye that will be assessed to determine if this is something that they could and/or should remove. Due to size and location photos have been sent out by our wonderful veterinarian for a second opinion.
🩺 There is a small firm mass on the inside of his left shoulder that we are the most concerned about. A fine needle asperite was done but was not affective in determining what exactly we are dealing with. This will be removed when he is under. Obviously due to texture and location we are worried about Mast Cell. Luckily it is fairly small and in a location that we would more than likely be able to get clean margins when removing. Once this mass is removed it will also be sent out for confirmation.
🩺 Abuelitos teeth are worn down and broken everywhere, a lot of root exposure so extractions with his dental will be absolutely necessary.
🩺 There is one/potentially two oral masses that will also be removed and sent out for testing.
🩺 Lastly, due to his age we will obviously be doing a senior panel pre op bloodwork prior to him being put under anesthesia.
We know this is a lot, this man has been through A LOT. He DESERVES to be pain free, he DESERVES to be healthy and we won’t stop until we get him there.
If you would like to help Abuelito get to the very best version of himself you can donate to his medical via PayPal or Venmo (link in our bio), or by calling our vet directly.
