At Sam Houston Jones State Park in Southwest Louisiana, RES is helping restore more than 800 acres of native habitat following the impacts of Hurricanes Laura and Delta.

Our work supports restoration across multiple habitat types, including longleaf pine savanna, strengthens ecosystem resilience, and advances long-term monitoring to better understand how birds, bats, and mammals respond as the landscape recovers.

In partnership with Woodside Energy, Louisiana State Parks, and McNeese State University, this project brings together ecological restoration, science, and stewardship at one of Louisiana’s most-visited state parks, a place that continues to matter deeply to local families, visitors, and wildlife.

Last week, RES Project Manager Nathan Renaudin joined state and local leaders to celebrate the announcement of the Bladenboro South Main Street Flood Resiliency Project, a $1.6 million nature-based initiative designed to reduce recurring flooding and strengthen community resilience.

During the event, Nathan highlighted how the project takes a watershed-scale approach to flood mitigation by improving drainage, restoring natural streamflow, and reconnecting floodplain storage to reduce flood risk throughout the community.

The project is expected to provide approximately 12 acre-feet of flood storage, decrease watershed flooding depths by more than 90%, and help protect over $80 million in residential, municipal, and critical infrastructure assets. Through outlet rehabilitation, channel restoration, and floodplain reconnection, the project will help move water more efficiently during everyday conditions while providing additional capacity during major storm events.

This effort demonstrates how nature-based solutions can address complex flooding challenges by working with natural systems to create lasting community benefits.

After years of flooding, Bladenboro gets $1.6 million from state for resilience project On Friday, state and county leaders came together to announce a $1.6 million flood resilience project.

A theme we keep hearing at RES from our permitting team is that on most large industrial projects in Maryland and Virginia, permitting eats half to two-thirds of the total delivery time. And most of that isn't agency review. It's incomplete applications, requirements that didn't get coordinated upfront, and mitigation that gets pulled together after impacts are already defined.

We think the fix isn't a faster process. It's an earlier one. The projects we see that hit their dates run permitting in parallel with design, not after it.
