Preparations for the engagement had been underway for months.

Alex, the son of one of the city's most prominent businessmen, was about to marry a young woman named Emma. They had met several years earlier, overcome countless hardships together, and shared a deep and genuine love.

Alex's mother, Margaret.

She was convinced that Emma was not worthy of becoming her son's wife.

In Margaret's opinion, the future wife of the heir to a powerful business empire should come from a wealthy family, have influential connections, and bring advantages to the family's business interests.

Emma, however, had grown up in an ordinary family and worked as an architect.

Despite that, Alex never wavered in his decision and refused to let his mother interfere in his relationship.

As time passed, Margaret's resentment only grew stronger.

She constantly searched for flaws in her future daughter-in-law, tried to persuade her son to cancel the wedding, and even introduced him to the daughters of her influential friends.

Yet every one of her efforts ended in failure.

Alex always gave the same answer:

“I love Emma, and she is the only woman I will ever marry.”

On the day of the engagement, the family rented a luxurious restaurant located on the top floors of one of the tallest skyscrapers in the city.

That evening, the elegant venue was filled with relatives, close friends, and the family's business associates.

Music filled the room, waiters served champagne, and guests congratulated the happy couple.

On the surface, everything seemed perfect.

But throughout the evening, Margaret never took her eyes off Emma.

Eventually, she walked over and quietly said,

“Emma, could you come with me for a moment? We need to talk in private.”

There was no one else nearby.

Only the sound of the wind and the distant hum of the city could be heard.

Margaret reached into her handbag, took out an envelope, and handed it to Emma.

“There are five million dollars in here. Take the money and disappear from my son's life.”

Emma looked at her in astonishment.

“Are you serious?”

“Absolutely.”

“No. I love Alex, and I have no intention of leaving him.”

Margaret's expression changed instantly.

“You don't understand. I will never allow you to become part of our family.”

“That decision isn't yours to make.”

For several long seconds, the two women stared at each other in silence.

Then Margaret spoke in a cold, emotionless voice.

“In that case, I'll get rid of you another way.”

“And what exactly are you planning to do?”

“I could simply push you off this roof and tell everyone you slipped and fell. I'm a respected woman. Everyone will believe me.”

“You wouldn't dare.”

Emma lost her balance and disappeared over the edge of the rooftop.
