Have you wanted to help at the race track but unsure what is needed? Did you want to have the best seat in the house to watch race cars fly by within feet from where you stand? Or do you know someone who wants to do those things? Race season is just around the corner and volunteers are needed to help put on the race events throughout the 2013 season.
Oregon Region Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Cascade Sports Car Club (CSCC) and Team Continental are groups of amateur race car drivers and enthusiasts who volunteer in various positions to organize and produce weekend championship races and driving schools all over the Pacific NW.
This calls for a lot of volunteers! You don't have to be a race car driver to help out; in fact, many of our volunteers have never driven on a track.
If you love watching fast cars at full speed, or talking about cars, or wanting to try something different and meet new people by spending a weekend with great people, you can do all those things as race volunteer. We offer our volunteers coffee in the morning, a barbecue on Saturday nights (race weekends only), and all the good company a person could wish for.
There is no better place to get close to the racing action than at a trackside turn station as a flagger, communicator or response person. As a turn worker, the drivers depend on you to give them information that they need quickly, to warn them of something that has happened on the track. As turn workers you are the race car drivers first line of defense.
Interested or experienced in emergency response, our Safety/ECrew is one of the best in the Northwest and can always use more people. In this position you are now the race car driver’s second line of defense.
Race Control personnel work via radios and talk to the turns about situations on the track and are ready to dispatch any safety equipment that is needed at a moment’s notice.
If you know cars, you might want to help at the Tech area, where cars are inspected and weighed.
Registration for all drivers, crew and volunteers is a very busy place, as everyone that is involved with the race weekend has to start their weekend there. If you are an organized person, like problem solving and talking to everyone.......do we have the spot for you.
Computer savvy people would be a real compliment to our Timing and Scoring staff. These are the people that get the results that the race car drivers depend on in their chase for a championship.
Our pre-grid area, a very busy place, gets the cars ready to go on track.
Our Starters give the go to start racing, show penalty flags and checker the winner. You get a bird's eye view from the Starter's Stand.
Driver services is a valuable area of information for the drivers and can be a hub of activity throughout the race weekend.
These are just a few of the areas that new people will find interesting and get satisfaction from volunteering for.
To learn more about race volunteer opportunities, join Cascade Sports Car Club and Oregon Region SCCA for a race volunteer orientation on Friday March 15. Meet in Portland International Raceway’s Rose Cup Room – 1940 N Victory Blvd (Rose Cup Room is at base of Goodyear Tower) at 5:30pm for refreshments & treats. Bring your questions and bring a friend!
