Troody was a dog who sat in an adoption kennel for 3 days, without medical treatment, wasn’t given pain medication and could have been adopted out for the price of $86

After she was placed with rescue, she was medically euthanized upon veterinarian evaluation. Her nose was so full of tumors that she could not breathe

The shelter director argued that the shelter did everything correct and defended his veterinarian’s decision to release Troody to the adoption floor on the grounds that she was BAR (bright, alert, responsive).

This is a shelter that kills upwards of 5,000 animals a year and critics pull every excuse to defend the shelter in their decisions to cover up animal neglect that is happening once the animals are in their custody.

When you walk the adoption floor, you’ll also find dogs with live ticks on their body, open wounds, visible injuries, and entire litters who have mere days before they are added to the daily “release” list

This is not here in Portland but it is a cautionary tale of what happens when members of the public defend the actions of the shelter instead of working to change the broken system that internally keeps the shelter animals caught in a cycle of abuse and neglect

If you’d like to keep up with shelter reform in San Antonio, you can follow my friend and fellow advocate (who was addressing city council in SA in the last clip) No Kill San Antonio
